This is exactly why the instigator rule needs to be eliminated, and have a player beat the daylights out of the offender. It works. The DOPeS do not. As we see, discipline is arbitrary and subjective. Honestly, how many guys would level cheap shots, if they knew that an enforcer would hunt them down and pummel them, while the officials let it happen? The players will never allow a CBA that increases the power of the league, and the DOPeS. It would also increase the hate and passion on both the teams, and the fans, something the league needs.

As a Flyers fan, I don’t think McDermid should have been suspended. There should have definitely been a penalty on the play, but supplemental discipline is unwarranted. Provorov was awkwardly in a hunched over position after McDermid started to initiate a hit to the chest. Unfortunate hit, yes. Luckily no one was hurt. Just goes to show how random the suspensions are in the league.

Is Pronger still with the DOPS? That may explain things.

I think he may have been promoted to a higher office in the league. It is kind of ironic that someone who was every bit as dirty as Matt Cooke and who deliberately tried to amputate a guy's foot with his skate blade (a la Chris Simon) is so highly regarded. Regardless, Parros is still in the DoPS and I am sure his decisions follows a similar thought pattern.

When choosing people to run the DoPS the league follows the same approach that the UN does when it appoints nations like Cuba, Syria, and China to its human rights commission .
